Introduction:
Only those who do not have literacy can be called illiterate. Illiterate people lag in all aspects of life. In many cases, illiteracy is an obstacle to the overall spiritual development of people. The person cursed with illiteracy usually cannot do anything for himself or society. The consequence of illiteracy is to follow silence, that is, to fall behind in every case. Illiterate people do not know who is abusing and exploiting the environment.
Rabindranath Tagore said that illiteracy, like human blindness, is the cruelest curse of the unfortunate people of this unhappy country. To understand the nature of illiteracy, we must realize our country India - where one-third of the total population is illiterate. It is necessary to eliminate this illiteracy.
India's illiteracy past and present:
Illiteracy is nothing new to India - working-class people in India seem to have known the definition of literacy since the Vedic age. During the Mughal period and a large part of the population did not have literacy. The wife did not have education and circulation.
The illiteracy of the English period gained great wisdom. The English did not understand well that if the Indians got the opportunity to get an education, they would realize the current situation better.
Understand how much the English are hurting them. The education they introduced in India aimed to create native employees who knew English to run the state and conduct trade. People educated in this education usually followed the English.
They did not have the desire and ability to inform the more significant part of society. This conspiracy by scholars like Raja Rammohun Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Rajnarayan Bose, Keshab Chandra Sen. However, the spread of literacy did not happen When the British left India, only 14% of the population was literate.
Nevertheless, if the decent society of the country had already tried to educate the masses, they might not have had to go through this ordeal. Seeing the darkness of illiteracy, Rabindranath Tagore commented that our society is comfortable because our people do not understand themselves.
To understand oneself properly, one has to develop latent energy through knowledge of letters. Swamiji was said, "Education is the manifestation of the perfect tion already in man." There is still much work to be done to spread education. The main reasons for the decline in education in present-day India are the lack of strength in traditional education, the indifference of the poor to education, the increase in teaching materials. Our traditional education is exceptionally powerless.
As a result, some subjects have become not educational subjects for the students. Second, people living in poverty are very reluctant to get an education. They put their sons and daughters directly into the workplace without receiving an education in educating S.C. (Scheduled Caste) and S.T. (Scheduled Tribes).
Third, the cost of study materials has risen so drastically that it is almost impossible for poor students to get an education. Although there is no limit to encouragement from the government, students in many schools have the opportunity to get free education. Still, education is not disseminated correctly due to the lack of good teachers. For these reasons, a large section of India's population today is illiterate.
Needs and remedies for education:
At present, the development of a country depends on its people. Nowadays, the need for education has increased. However, today, about 350 million people in India are immersed in the darkness of ignorance.
The number of schools, colleges, universities have increased, but literacy has not increased at that rate. According to Rabindranath, 'I am casting the new in the mold of the old.' Our shame is that many people in India do not know how to write their names.
They have to follow the tips. The votes of all these ignorant people have no value. According to one educator, "the stupid, illiterate and blind people are pulling the chariot of the new age of Western democracy at our doorstep at the end of subjugation." No country can prosper by maintaining illiteracy. The first task of our polite society is to educate the uneducated.
Nevertheless, educating the hungry masses means just trying to extinguish the Lelihan fire. So, first of all, we have to provide food to the uneducated people.
There is no shortage of rich people in our country. If we inspire them with patriotism, they will join our good deeds. The path of eradicating illiteracy is not closed in front of us. Every year five to six lakh students of our West Bengal pass the secondary examination. If they take on educating the uneducated one by one, an equal number of people will acquire literacy every year.
It is important to remember that no effort is successful without sacrifice—Sister Nivedita's outstanding talent. Today Nivedita Girls School is famous for Yagya, today Ramakrishna Mission has become world-famous for the abandonment of Swamiji and his other guru brothers.
Conclusion:
Inspired by the thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore, the Government of West Bengal inaugurated the Bengal Literacy Promotion Society on September 6, 1986. The National Literacy Mission (N.L.M) in May 1986. In 1991, a literacy campaign in West Bengal. It that this will be of particular benefit. Rural libraries have in many villages of India.
Due to this, non-formal education has increased in many parts. Addressing the workers and a world to win." A society free of illiteracy is self-sufficient. To establish this society, both the government and the people have to come forward. Swamiji says- Real education is that which helps one to stand on his legs.
